A project from WHO India County Office has been given to Drug Information Center, Karnataka State Pharmacy Council in recognition of its expertise, credibility, hard work and experience in this field. This project will be another milestone in the history of Karnataka. The selected drug information centers are Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Haryana and Rajasthan. These centers will start functioning from January 2007.

The
council provides training on Rational
Use of Drugs to doctors of Employees
State Insurance Scheme (ESIS),
which is funded by Karnataka State
for Promotion of Rational Use
of Drugs (KSPRUD) through DSPRUD.

Council has been given an international
prestigious project funded by
World Health Organisation (WHO)/
Health Action International (HAI)
to measure the medicine prices
in Karnataka.

KSPC is also involved in consumption
analysis of medicines by Karnataka
State Drugs Logistics and Warehousing
Society (Regd.) for the representative
sample of health facilities of
Karnataka.

Council imparts Rational Use of
Drugs training to government doctors
of Karnataka. The council has
prepared “Standard Treatment
Guidelines (STG) & Essential
Drugs List (EDL)” for the
state of Karnataka. This is to
facilitate rational drug use among
doctors of Karnataka.
Karnataka State
Pharmacy Council has started continuing
education for the Registered Pharmacists
in 1998-99. This is an ongoing process
scheduled to be held all over the
State. KSPC has trained 192 pharmacists
of Karnataka Health System Development
Project, Government of Karnataka Health
and Family Welfare department between
December 1999 to February 2000.
The Council gives
financial assistance to Registered
Pharmacists to go abroad for workshops
or for paper presentation.
Karnataka
State Pharmacy Council is the first
council to appoint Pharmacy Inspectors
under section 26(A) of the Pharmacy
Act, 1948. They are eminent members
of the teaching faculty from Karnataka.
They are instructed to inspect the
premises where dispensing is carried
out to ensure that dispensing is carried
out by the Registered Pharmacists.
In 1998, the members of Kamataka State
Pharmacy Council have constituted
Kamataka Registered Pharmacist Welfare
Trust (KRKPWT) to provide financial
security to the survivors of the Registered
Pharmacist in the State of Karnataka.
This is the first scheme of its kind
in this country designed for the pharmacists
by the pharmacist themselves. The
scheme is extended to the ailing pharmacists
suffering from diseases such as Cancer,
Kidney Failure, Bypass Surgery, etc.,
and other ailments of serious nature
(in case the scheme is well responded
by the members) as decided by the
trust. Since 1998, 32 families of
deceased pharmacists and 16 pharmacists
for hospitalization have benefited
under this scheme.

pharmacists in their daily dispensing

has been prepared to assist and
guide doctors in primary and secondary
health facilities in providing
quality care to patients. This
is being field tested to ensure
that the opinion of the intended
users are considered and incorporated.

drugs list for primary, secondary
and tertiary levels of healthcare
for the state of Karnataka.

serves as a useful resource for
doctors and pharmacists.
The task force on Health & Family
Welfare, headed by Dr.H. Sudarshan
has complimented the efforts of KSPC
in promoting Rational Use of Drugs
and the activities of Drug Information
Center.
Karnataka
State Pharmacy Council has been complimented
repeatedly by various organizations
and Government departments for the
phenomenal progress made in organizing
the profession of Pharmacy and in
streamlining the Pharmaceutical services
both in the public sector as well
as in the private sector. These steps
lead to the building up of efficient
pharmaceutical services in various
spheres of application and will ultimately
assist the people in the maintenance
of better health. The council has
done a remarkable job and the success
that has been achieved is entirely
due to the co-operation of the pharmacists
and doctors.
